I just got an amazing phone call (at home of course--no longer have an office) from a guy I hired as a part time instructor a few years ago--at first he was ok, but started missing class, not turning in grades on time and couldn't be reached by phone, stood up students he promised to meet, graded unfairly, didn't return papers, didn't cover syllabus, etc., etc.

He wants to use my name as a reference.

I told him he could list my name but I would mention all of the above if anyone called me. And then he wanted to argue about why it wasn't so much, he wasn't so bad, etc.

I retired a year ago--even talking to him seemed like unpaid work. What universe does he live in?

I admire that you'd even tell him as much directly. I'd have just asked the "are you really sure about that" and just gone ahead with things.

Yep, sometimes you wonder. I had a student ask me for a recommendation who I'd confronted about plagiarizing an assignment, and I had a dean of a college I hadn't worked at in years who thought it was a great idea to have me write a letter for a different former student to explain why some bureaucratic nonsense wasn't in the precise order the dean wanted it in. I did write both. The first was technically a recommendation and the second hopefully straightened out the student's problems. But I doubt either the student in the first case or the dean in the second got exactly what they were hoping for.

Obviously it's the universe in which everything he does is right, and every wrong is someone else's fault. People like that make me want to just smack them upside the head.

Some people somehow rewrite history in their own head, or can't realise what their effect on other people is, or something. I've probably recounted in my own lj the Case of the Person Who Caused Ongoing Enormous Ruckuses on the Listserv I Was Running (including saying on and off-list some fairly nasty things to myself), and then, when applying for jobs, asked me if I would be a referee (this was perhaps a bit sad, we had never met in rl, and person presumably didn't have many people to ask: but one could quite see why that was the case)
