This is the time of year when I realize that my job is being the complaint department. I really, really do not want to talk with any more students about the very good reasons they had for:

missing their exam
missing all their classes
not turning in their papers
cut and pasting their papers from online
leaving false cancellation notices for their classes
calling and leaving obscene messages on their instructors voice mail
not signing up for the right class so they shouldn't get a bad grade in the wrong one that they did take
and so on

and so on. I usually think that what my community college needs is recess--today I think it's corporal punishment.

Oh dear!

missing their exam - Once, in first year, I got sick. I had a doctor's note!
missing all their classes - Well, not all my classes...
not turning in their papers - Umm.
cut and pasting their papers from online - Plagiarism = evil
leaving false cancellation notices for their classes - Never seen this happen.
calling and leaving obscene messages on their instructors voice mail - You're kidding! I have no idea if this has ever happened to my profs, but I suppose it must have!
not signing up for the right class so they shouldn't get a bad grade in the wrong one that they did take - I've yet to hear any of my friends (or me) actually use this excuse. We complain to each other, of course, but not to the teacher.
and so on - Ah. I got hit by a car? My friend used that one once. It was true!

LOL! Poor you. This is why I never want to become a teacher!

I can top this. My mother is a retired French teacher, and a pupil in her school handed in a taped oral assignment to another teacher that consisted of an obscene message in English. The guy said that he might have given him a decent mark if the message had been in correct French ;-)

Anything that shows some progress

Yeah, I'd settle for anything that showed any kind of learning had happened anywhere about anything! or even any attempt at it!

On the bright side, I have a lot of wonderful students who did extremely well. Shouldn't complain about those who are the aberrations.

Somtimes the disasters ARE real--it's just sorting out the true from the false that gets to you.
