I went to an art exhibit today--called "I Heard a Voice," by Lesley Dill. It was about ecstasy, the creative act, the visionary mind, and seeing it made me realized that being human is more amazing than I'd been remembering. She creates mostly sculpture, often with wire, paper cut-outs, and fiber, but also has some photographs--and words. Literally, the sculptures have letters and words all through them, mostly from wonderful but not not well-known poems by Emily Dickinson (also Neruda, Rilke, Blake, etc). Photographs of exhibits don't give you the real sense of them, but here's a video of the exhibition. A dress made of wire with letters hanging from the wires, a red woman with huge red banners stream from her back...I had the same feeling when I left that I had when I read Ginsburg's "Sunflower Sutra" for the first time.

ETA: You can get a better sense of her work at her own website: http://www.lesleydill.net/index.htm

I think one reason I liked it so much was that it was about the creative joyous mind. I've seen too much art (and film and literature) that dwelt on the darkness--and the darkness is really there, and we do need to be aware of it and understand it. But the glory is there too, and there's even more when we celebrate it.

"Take all away from me, but leave me Ecstasy..." (Dickinson--also part of one of the sculptures)

That sounds amazing -- and uplifting in the best sense.

wow. really, REEEEAALLLY hard to tell from viewing the video what is happening in that show. Sculpture and installation is so hard to do justice to.

It's also interesting that you saw it as uplifting. Because there was so much fist-to-mouth imagery...I found that very intense. And saw words like "Secrets" on the red fabric streaming from the seated red figure.

I could tell one thing, though, from the video. That I would have LOVED to see this show in person. it looks totally awesome!

There were definitely some painful things mixed in. One photograph is of a woman licking tears off a man's face. The streamers behind the red figure are from a project the artist did with a gospel choir called Tongues on Fire (http://www.lesleydill.net/tonguesOnFire.html), about people's visionary experiences--some of the things written on the banners are quotations about that (things like light and fire)--and many of the images are of words and images coming out of people's heads and backs.

She's an amazing person. She also did a kite project (http://www.lesleydill.net/kiteProject.html) (one piece from that is in this)--kites are really exciting, I think.
