Relief

I was counting the days it takes from the time Biggie eats something wrong until it's time for surgery so that I would know if I could get it done at the vet here instead of at the emergency vet while I folded up the quilt to put it away and there... lying innocently in the folds... was dilator number 12.

Such a relief.

Bed clothes changed and bed made and I'm dressed and ready to face whatever else this day decides.

I did put a load of wash in and discovered yet another vote for Steve The Repair Guy. For as long as I can remember, every time I've done a load of laundry, I've gotten a warning to clean the filter. Since I always clean it after every load, I just clear the warning and proceed. But, now that Steve taught me how to clean it properly... no more warning! Very cool.

And one last thing I forgot to report. The tariff hoarders have hit the Kerigold supply. Safeway always has a very well stocked section of all of their different forms and flavors. Not so yesterday. They had a couple of tubs of the w/olive oil version and one of the way more expensive 2 stick packages. And that was it. But, I learned down and in and scored 4 of the regular 1 pounders way at the very back where you could hardly see them. (Yep, I am a hoarder, too!) Whew.

If I die tonight, whoever empties my fridge will really wonder what the fuck is up with all the damn butter! (Or be really grateful for the found treasure!)

My Mom used to do this. There was the Great Pimento Shortage. Our pantry shelves were taken over by those little jars of pimento for years. In her later years, I'd get emails with the subject line 'If I die tonight' and then a description of why she had just bought a 4 year supply of make up sponges or light bulbs or whatever.

So at least I come by this kink honestly.

Wednesday it has been allegedly going to rain, but no sign of it yet

What I read

Finished The Life Revamp - okay, not mind-blowing?

Having another bout of lower-back misery, re-reads of KJ Charles, Any Old Diamonds (Lilywhite Boys, #1) (2019), Gilded Cage (Lilywhite Boys, #2) (2019) and Masters in This Hall (Lilywhite Boys, #3) (2022). Still querying the understanding of the divorce law at the time.... (there seems to be an assumption at one point that spouse in prison was grounds??).

On the go

Started Upton Sinclair, Dragon's Teeth (Lanny Budd, #3) (1942). This is the one with spiritualism taken in the serious experimental fashion of the times along with New Thought, besides the whole international political situation. Also, spot-on fashions in child-rearing, though I don't think Truby King was actually name-checked over the strict 4-hour feeding regimen!

Set to one side as Vivian Shaw, Strange New World (Dr Greta Helsing, #4) came out yesterday.

Still dipping into Melissa Scott, Scenes from the City.

Still working on the book for review, which is rather dense: excellent work but not exactly light reading.

Up next

Should get to Anthony Powell, Casanova's Chinese Restaurant (1960) in preparation for online discussion group.

Discovered that there is a new work by Gail Godwin, Getting to Know Death: A meditation (2024), a memoir generated by a serious accident at the age of 85.

Still have not got round to latest Literary Review.

One of the last few morning suns

I cannot sit at my table this morning because the frickin sun is beaming in. BUT, the shades guy sent me an email that my shades should be delivered this week. And he included the name and contact info of the installer guy. I'm guessing that 'this week' means they won't get installed until next week but that's better than next month! I want my table back.

At night, I use little plastic dilators to keep my nose from getting stuffed up while I sleep. I have a package of 12 that I keep by the bed. I have a plastic box in the bathroom where I put last night's. When they have all been used, I wash and repeat. And I keep careful count. Because Biggie. Last night, one went missing. I can't find it. I don't know if Biggie did. If he ate it, he's not showing signs or trouble yet. But...

[edit: FOUND IT!!!]

I tore up the bed looking so I guess, it's now bed linen changing day.

Also Food and Beverage Committee meeting is today. Just swapped texts with Martha about meeting her there and she says that the aqua fit class met yesterday in the freezing cold pool. It was the talk of the town last night she said. "They [class peops] may never warm up." I'll stop in this afternoon and check on the pool so we can decide about volleyball tomorrow. We play for fun. It's no fun trying to make sure the ball does not get punctured by an ice shard.

I'm thinking about making up a bunch of snowmen dolls for the shelf for next winter. If I made one or two a week now, I'd have enough, I think, for a robust shelf offering starting in November. Maybe. I have a good pattern in my head. I think I'll do a test.

Another Day, Another Photo...

Actually, I took the following picture yesterday - on my walk around a section of the financial district. The section that is in front of Trinity Church and towards the Freedom Tower. Didn't go that far yesterday - because my leg was bothering me, and I didn't have a lot of time. At any rate I've been down this cobble stone road before -- it's completely blocked off to traffic - due to the New York Stock Exchange being on the cross street. Security and historic preservation.

The street is in front of The Trump Building (which I have not taking a photo of - because it's an ugly building, and not worth it - it's circa 1930s gothic, but it's ugly). And across from the Trump Building aka 40 Wall Street is...a Caribbean Jerk Chicken Vending Truck - smells delicious. (I'd get some - but my dietary restrictions keep me at bay.)

The Jerk Chicken Stand is kind of sticking the finger to Trump, it's right across from his Building, is the only vendor stand across from it, and the only vehicle across from the building. And about as diverse and non-white as you can get. Gotta love it. There's all sorts of subtle little protests across the Financial District.

My new work digs, as you may have guessed by now, is a photographer's dream come true. So many new things to take photos of.

Work was better today, aided greatly by sleep - I slept 6 hours and 43 minutes as opposed to 5 hours and twenty-three minutes, and that made a huge difference in my cognitive abilities. personal stuff - kind of boring...actually )

Anyhow, need to stop this and make dinner. But before I do? On today's walk, I discovered a little farmer's market, where I picked up gluten-free Irish Soda Bread, and gluten-free biscotti. I've never had either. So was happy with my finds.

It was just across the street from my office building. Insanely convenient.

And not much further, was Battery City Park, and this lovely little walk complete with lots of flowers in full bloom. They are hardy little flowers, and unlike the impatiens around Bowling Green Park, actually survived the dip into the 40s last night. I have no idea what they are called. I take pictures of flowers - I can't grow them or remember their names. I may be many things, but a horticulturist or botanist is not among them. The green thumb jumped over me and landed on my brother.

Excursing for ART

Today partner and I did make it through dangers untold and hardships unnumbered (actually, 2 Tubes, 1 Overground, and a walk through Belair Park) to Dulwich Picture Gallery for the Tirzah Garwood exhibition.

Also a certain amount of queuing even if we had timed entry tickets, as due possibly to the way things were laid out there was a certain amount of clumping up around the early parts of the exhibition.

But really rather good - got the impression that Garwood was an artist who was having fun with her art rather than Suffering For It, as well as, like so many female artists of her day, working in a whole range of media and crafts. E.g. her work on marbled paper seems to have been a significant contribution to the family income at certain points. Also did embroidery, quilting, collages, etc and there's a lot of playfulness to her work. Though also I found a number of her 'house' pictures verging on the unheimlich (a certain Shirley Jackson-esque note?)

Did a fairly quick walk round the rest of the gallery after we'd done the exhibition (not our first visit) and then home by a different route - the other Dulwich station, Overground plus Tube. Nostalgia of train passing through vistas of South London.

It was an absolutely perfect morning, with the temperature down to about 13°C/55°F when I got up, and clear and sunny after sunrise. I decided to make the most of it by going for a long walk, and was thinking about a couple of different routes I could take but eventually settled on a third route, over to the Target/Giant group of shops by a long way around. (I ended up covering about 10 km/6 miles.) I was thinking of browsing around in Target for a while, but then I realised I needed some small sausages for my egg muffin lunches so I decided to go to Giant instead. I took a more direct/shorter route home which took me past Rodmans, a shop which specialises in imported foods and stocks various English marmalades (amongst other things) so since I was carrying a backpack and money*, I dropped in there to get some marmalade. On the way to the marmalade I found a display of TimTams (from Australia) so of course I had to get a couple of packets of those. I had bought some dish detergent as well as the sausages at Giant, so when I added the TimTams and two jars of marmalade my backpack was quite heavy and I was glad I was only a couple of km from home by then. I will try to ration myself to one TimTam per day, but it won't be easy.

*I do walk past Rodmans fairly regularly but I'm not usually carrying either a backpack or money if it's just a walk rather than a walk to shops.

I'm very glad I took advantage of the great weather this morning because it's turning cloudy now and the forecast predicts rain for the next two days.

If it's Tuesday...

I have only been up for a couple of hours but even that already has me confused. How can it be Tuesday if there was no volleyball??? This is going to be a long day.

I'm still wallowing in the relief of a fixed washer (plus, now I know how to keep it fixed) and the resolution of how the condo proceeds are going to go and where and one other thing that I cannot even now think of.

My friend, Julie's first Amazon order arrived. I can tell she had so much fun shopping. Scott says she's not done yet. I have a basket in the coat closet of all her stuff. Scott (a banker by trade) sent me the $$ via some kind of international Zelle-ish service. Quite cool. He sent to Friday night and I got a tracking website. It was in my bank account by lunch yesterday.

My baseball journey this season has been interesting. It started because the Mariner TV broadcast team was changed to 100% horrible announcers. I have been listening to some games on the radio but even those have gotten ear weary. There is one of those announcers who just will not shut up. I finally had to just turn it off yesterday because he was wearing a hole into my brain with shit that not only I but NO ONE with half a brain cell would care about. The second and third of the radio team aren't that much better. As of right now, the Mariners are in pretty good shape against the rest of the teams but even so. Ugh.

So I've been listening to other teams. The Phillies also have a very good team BUT, almost more importantly to me, they have GREAT broadcasters. They also rotate them - one central guy and then a cast of a few others, all of whom are interesting. And, while they, too, have THE FEAR OF DEAD AIR, they at least fill it with interesting shit. And they have a great mascot. The only problem I have with them is their center fielder who has long hair - I don't mind long hair but his is long strings of grease and it makes me crazy. The Mariners had a pitcher with long, greasy hair once. Everyone loved him. I hated the days when he pitched. I have a thing about long greasy hair.

But, also the Mets are a fun team to watch with lots of good players (and no hair issues) but their announcers aren't excellent. I really like the Guardian's manager but neither the rest of the team or the broadcasters are very interesting. If the Phillies or Mets aren't playing, I'll turn 'em in.

Today is house cleaning day. With my new house cleaner.

But first I need a shower. In my own shower, which is rare since I always shower at the pool. Oh well, good test to make sure it all still works.

May meme

1. The first of May – it’s Labour Day, also known as International Worker’s Day. If you’ve retired, how long (in years) did you work for before you stopped? If you are still working, how long will it be, before you retire?

May Day, a.k.a. International Workers' Day, is a far cry from U.S. Labor Day in September.

I retired early, but then I was working in the family business at a young age.

2. Do you own a toolbox? What does it have in it?

I own a tool box, but all my tools don't fit in it. That's fine with me because I had my toolbox stolen once, and having no tools for awhile was very awkward. These days I do keep screwdrivers, pliers, a few wrenches and a tape measure in my toolbox. Things that don't fit include a long bubble level, a metal-working square, a set of drill bits, more wrenches, screw drivers with less common heads, dial calipers, a very large set of pliers (great for opening stubborn food jars), a hammer and so on.

3. How old is the home you live in?

Early 1990's. My house in Missouri was from the 1930s, and the one in Phoenix was from the late 1990's.

4. Do you often wear shorts?

No, I'm old enough I'd look pretty silly in shorts, just like the other men my age running around in shorts in Tucson. Read more... )

May Question a Day Memage...

I got behind. Sorry about that. So you are getting 19 questions as opposed to four or five.

Brief whine? Sigh, FB at times pummels me with stupid opinions. Also it wants me to save the world? I cannot save the world. No one can save the world. It's not possible. Been there, done that, have the battle scars. I learned long ago, the only person you can save in this life is yourself and even that can be dicey, because let's face it the world is determined to kill us. Kind of hard to save something that is trying to kill you.

Oh, forgot, the Buffy Reboot has cast its Buffy - it's the female lead from The Skeleton Crew. (And yes, I thought she was a bit young for the role too. I've mixed feelings about this. But I'm also not the target audience?)

May Memage

1. The first of May – it’s Labour Day, also known as International Worker’s Day. If you’ve retired, how long (in years) did you work for before you stopped? If you are still working, how long will it be, before you retire?

Interestingly enough, it's not in the US, for various reasons they moved that to September. (I think it's because we have Mother's Day and Memorial Day in May, and that's one too many holidays? I don't know.)

With any luck it will be four and a half years. I plan on retiring at 62.
But we shall see.

2. Do you own a toolbox? What does it have in it?

I do. It's not a tool box though - it's a plastic container with various tools. And I can't find it - it's hidden in my closet. Handy - I'm not. That's my brother. The domestic, handy-man, gardening, and nurturing genes leaped over me and landed on him. He cleans, he makes maple syrup, he installs shelves and windows (even builds them) along with a loft space, he rewires his kitchen, he puts together his stove, he creates a huge five acre vegetable garden complete with a mini orchard, he takes care of his cats, his daughter, he outfits her car with a sink...the man is insanely talented. I'm lucky if I can assembly a table or a peddler that comes in the mail.

3. How old is the home you live in?

It's pre-war, so 1920s? Possibly earlier. It comes complete with a fall-out shelter.

4. Do you often wear shorts?

No, I prefer capris or pants that come down just below the knee, or long shorts.

5. Today, in 1864, Nellie Bly was born (the pen name of Elizabeth Cochrane, an American journalist). An American journalist, she is widely known for her record-breaking trip around the world in 72 days in emulation of Jules Verne's fictional character Phileas Fogg. Have you read ‘Around The World in 80 Days’ or seen a film adaptation?

Yes, I've seen the television series (with Pierce Bronsan and the one with David Tennant, the one with Tennant is better), along with the film adaptation with David Niven. If you want to see one? See the one with David Tennant, Bronsan and Niven aren't as entertaining. I may have read it - but can't remember.

6. Do you sit at a dining table when you eat a meal at home?

I don't have one, so no. Did that when I visited mother. At home? I sit and eat at my coffee table with a dinner tray.

7. Are you usually early or late to meetings/appointments?

Early. I hate to keep people waiting on me. I'd rather wait on them? Also, I have a fear of missing something or missing the appointment.

8. Do you know how to find the North Star (Polaris in the Northern Hemisphere) or the Southern Pole Star (Sigma Octantis in the Southern Hemisphere) in the night sky?

No. I used to, but forgot.

9. What was the first fandom you were ever involved in?

Buffy.

[I have to go to bed, so stopping there tonight. You'll have to wait to see the rest, I guess. Here's a picture from my walk at lunchtime today:

Anti climatic ... I hope

So Steve arrived and was very nice. He ran tests and asked questions and looked at his little tablet thing that he had plugged into the machine. The only failure was my filters. I keep all of the lint off of them but apparently that is not enough. He rubbed and rubbed with his thumb and removed some schmutz and said that was the problem. The only problem.

On the one hand, his diagnosis was backed up by earlier error messages I got. But, on the other hand, I'm not convinced. I feel like I'll soon be paying another $50 and seeing him again.

I have a small load in now. So we will soon know for sure. 110 minutes to be exact.

Aqua yoga was canceled today. I talked to Lori, the instructor who is leaving, and she said maybe she would teach Jake, the guy coming in part time, how to lead the class. I'm not hopeful.

Martha sent me a text that she found out that Lori is vying for the marketing position that is opening up so at least she'll still be around maybe.

The class today was canceled because the pool is still ice cold! The maintenance guy says the thermometer that controls the temperature is on the fritz. No telling when they will get that fixed. Volleyball is canceled tomorrow.

My son in law was playing chess with 5-year-old Aria who, as you will see, has not mastered the game. She proceeds to capture his Queen by moving one of her Knights straight ahead 3 spaces. This conversation ensues:
“You can’t do that Ari”, he explained, “you have to move a Knight in an ‘L’ shape”.
She looked at him as if he was mad and said, “I did!”
“That isn’t an L shape!”
“Yes it is! I made a lower case L.”

Have you seen the news today? Oh Boy! (I know - let's look at flowers instead?)

[The title is actually a riff off of a Beatles song lyric, the song is entitled A Day in the Life written in 1967 by John Lennon during the Vietnam War. (Lennon didn't really write protest songs, he wrote riffs on what he observed around him.) A nasty war - and the last war that Americans were "drafted" to serve. A lot of folks fled to Canada during that WAR to avoid the draft. It lasted seemingly forever. They did away with the draft partly because of that War. My uncle was in it, and when I visited France in the 1980s, I stayed with a French family whose father had served in Vietnam, on the French side, when France was occupying it. We really don't learn from each other, do we? I also got to visit a bunch of WWII bunkers when I was visiting France in the 1980s. I was staying in Bretagne, and the bunkers were Nazi bunkers along the beaches, while the Nazi's occupied France back in the early 1940s.It's actually an interesting song.. and it starts with the following lyrics:

"I read the news today oh boy
About a lucky man who made the grade
And though the news was rather sad..." ]

I came back to work today and felt bombarded with information. I went on my personal email - and felt bombarded with information. I went on my Firefox Browser (which has various articles) and felt bombarded with information.
Most of it anxiety inducing, or just confusing.

I looked at the national news? And thought...ACKKKK! Then looked at the global news? And thought... ACKKK! Local news isn't quite as bad? But still...ack? ( A Mexican Navy Ship crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge over the weekend, it was a lovely sailing ship, destroyed the sails and injured and killed a few crew members and passengers. And that wasn't the worst news (I won't tell you what that is - mainly because I managed to forget about it completely and do not feel like hunting it down). It was all over the local news (the Mexican Navy Ship accident - they are still trying to figure out why it crashed and why it lost control of its navigation, apparently). That and the NJ Transit Strike - which appears to have reached a tentative agreement, resolving the strike.) I just wanted the weather. The weather in NYC isn't that bad, it's 70F/21C at the moment. And it was 55F/12C this morning. With a breeze. A crisp spring day. I wore a sweater and a jacket. On the way home? Just the jacket.

It's also very pretty in NYC, especially in Brooklyn, which is heavily wooded and residential (or the area I reside in, is, not all areas are created equal). NYC has a policy - for every tree removed, you plant about twenty. It used to be two, now, it's twenty. So as a result, we have a lot of trees. Also flowers - due to the climate, which is relatively mild in comparison to 85% of the rest of the country, we have all sorts of flowers and they last for a long time.

See?

Some bearded irises of the purple variety...

Some of the orange variety - at least I think they are orange. I personally prefer purple, but your mileage may vary.

And...whatever this is...

Also, kind of sore today -Read more... )

Anyhow.. I'm trying to avoid the news at the moment for my mental health (aren't we all? I'm sure you can all relate?). (Also it's not like I can do anything about it? Everyone wants money - I don't have enough to go around and still survive. Also, it feels a bit like I'm throwing it down a well. Conflict and protesting make me physically ill. So I guess I'll just keep muddling through and doing what I am doing? Also the news for the most part has been following a specific pattern, or so I've noticed? At the start of the week it is horrible, and then sometime around the weekend, it becomes rather optimistic. So avoid the news until well, the weekend?)

Makes me think of this Beatles album I linked you to? It ends with...George Harrison's Here Comes the Sun. (George was more optimistic than Lennon, who wrote Day in a Life.) Someone on social media stated George Harrison was banning the Republicans from using his music, and I felt the need to advise them that Harrison was dead. Long dead. Kind of impossible, unless it's his estate or he's doing it from the grave?

Anyhow, here's another iris..

More dets

So, I still don't know why we are stretching this closing thing out. Buyer has had the money for two weeks. BUT... I did find out that sometime next week, a notary will come here with all the shit I need to sign. AND with a form for me to tell them what to do with the $$. Turns out I can have them wire it directly to my investments guys and because it's wired and not ACH'd, there's no waiting for the 'check to clear' week.

I've got all the details on how to do that and am relieved cause it means I don't have to sweat the small stuff like moving all that money around.

Interestingly, I used and AI search to find out how Washington state handles no mortgage real estate transfers. One search and I got all kinds of very on point info.

A week ago, I cleared ads and AI out of my default search engine. (Here's an explanation and how to. I've really enjoyed the cleaner version and when I need AI, I go get it. This time, I just went right to Gemini. I've also found that depending on your needs, Amazon's Rufus can be quite handy.

The appliance guy tracker is now showing ETA of 2:45. If he scooches out much further I will be able to make the class.

It's a beautiful mild sunny day but rather breezy, so I'm sure pollen and other stuff is flying around everywhere.

I went out before 6 am to walk to Safeway to pick up a couple of things (I love being able to do grocery shopping so early in the morning), then after breakfast I took the car through the carwash and came home via the organic supermarket, where I stocked up on a few necessities for the week. I'm trying to get into the habit of only buying groceries on an "as needed" basis, but it's hard because I've always liked to keep plenty of stuff on hand for "just in case". However, that's really not necessary with just one person in the house and with Safeway so close.

When I got home I went for a quick walk to the post office because I had a letter to post, then dusted the whole house. I've been doing fairly thorough house cleaning every second week and this is that week, so I'll be vacuuming and cleaning the kitchen and bathroom later in the week. While I was dusting in the kitchen I accidentally knocked a (non-functioning) light fixture off its anchor. It must not have been very securely fixed in place, because I was just running the fluffy duster around it when suddenly it dropped, and is now hanging by its cables. A little screw cap, which was apparently the only thing holding up the fixture, was dislodged, and I can't quite reach to put it back on. (Standing on a step stool.) There is a taller ladder in the shed, but I am not getting up on that with no-one to spot me even though it's got wide treads and side rails. I think the wiring for that particular light fixture must have been dodgy from the start, because it stopped working fairly soon after it was installed. Just another thing I might have to get fixed before I try to sell the house.

12 days

I just got a note from Bret that the condo closing is in 12 days. NO clue why it's taking so long but I decided to leave it alone. It's not worth the bear poking. I just want the damn thing over with. And all of the people involved, out of my hair for good. 12 days. Fine. At least I have now made my last HOA payment and I will end up owing the electric company probably about $30 and that will be it. Buhbye.

ETA on washer repair is now showing 2:20 pm (it was 2 pm earlier this morning so clearly fluid). What will probably be the last aqua yoga class starts at 2. Sad trombone.

Once again, a book I had on hold came ready at the library. I started listening to it a couple of nights ago. I was sure it was not for me but I kept listening. Then last night it was 'well, I'll just listen for a bit to make sure I want to abandon'. Still listening. It could tank but the premise is so delicious. Four women assassins who have worked as a team for many years are forced into retirement due to old age and aren't happy about it. Killers of a Certain Age by Deanna Raybourn. I'm giving it one more night, at least.

Nothing planned between now and 2:20. Probably there will be knitting.
